Next time will be just *that* much better

I suppose that the most frustrating this coming out of this weekend’s trip is that when you do a trip, or some event, or something that is supposed to be fun for your friends and family, there is always a risk that something will go wrong. Some things are predictable, some aren’t.

If no planing had gone into this trip, I would just feel pretty stupid and annoyed, but Yulia worked hard to find a great place to go to, I helped her scramble to find last minute fishing when the original charter fell through, I checked maps, routes and weather, and used marine trip planning to determine travel times.

But everything went wrong. Just fucking everything. Everything took longer. Everything was more difficult. Mind you, we still had some good times, but it got overwhelming.

Any time you want to do something interesting, you take some risk. It could be money, time, health, whatever. If you don’t want to take any risks, then you avoid far too much. For this specific trip, I don’t know if we could have made everything better, but definitely some things. Planning for more down time in the day would have improved things a lot, or getting better weather, or skipping the boat. (but then we would have had to catch two ferries in a row, a different risk, with a smaller downside)

If I was the type to get depressed about this I would just avoid planning for these interesting trips, but I don’t feel like being so defeated. Our next trip will turn out to be a lot more fun.
