Sultans of Swing

At some point sleeping would be actually a good idea.

We woke up tired. Its our last full day and we are really finally relaxing at this point. Yulia went for a walk and I immediately reserved six chairs down by the pool – right on the pools edge. It’s a valuable lesson to realize that you got to get your chairs reserved ahead of time or else you’re gonna end up sitting over on the side where you can’t get any shade. I left my hat as a marker on our chairs. With that out of the waWe’ve been taking the day easy not really doing much just swimming and watching one of the iguanas swim with us. The pool has trees iy i walked back over towards the espresso stand – and saw Simone getting breakfast. This is actually the first time I’ve confirmed Simone eating. To this point I’ve thought he subsisted strictly on Cappuccinos and cigarettes.

We had a small breakfast and Yulia came down and met us for a coffee. The plan today was no plan. We were going to swim and not leave the resort. We could always change our mind of course, but nothing was on the schedule. We split up after breakfast and I went to the lounge chairs to “guard” them. That meant a nap. I rested alone for a while, then others started getting their chairs, and eventually Yulia and therest came over. We had a great location. The pool has little planters with palm trees out in the water, and there are iguanas that live up in those trees. So they swim back-and-forth between the trees, if you didn’t know, iguanas could swim, it’s gonna be a bit of a surprise. Several women screamed with surprise as the iguanas said hi.

We hung out until about 1130 and then realize that the cliff bar down on the far side of the resort “Baraccuda” is open this time. We keep walking down there in the mornings only to find it closed. It has cool little swings right around the bar and a long wooden deck that overlooks the water. When we arrived there were chairs and tables set out. There were a few people here and there, but largely it was empty. We chatted to the bartender, and sadly, they were out of Mezcal. We couldn’t get the cocktail of the day which was a Mezcalina, but they did have their own version of a Michelada, which is called a “redeye” in Cabo. Apparently a Michelada in Cabo is just beer with lime, which makes no sense whatsoever, but welcome to Mexico i guess. We were swinging by the bar on our little swings, drinking beer watching the waves roll by and seeing fishing boats going out filled with tourists for the day.

Yulia and I have been boating for years. We just bought our fourth boat and are working on selling our third. Those things never really lineup. It’s been irresistible for me to watch the boats out here as they go. We’ve mostly been Lake boaters and that’s fairly well protected, but I watch these boats roll straight out of the marina here into the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez and I just can’t resist to watch. We’re hoping to become longer distance boaters this year, including cruising up the San Juan Islands. We’ve never really done anything as deep as head out “the big left turn” (that’s the Straight of Juan de Fuca) and head towards the ocean. When you’re as far north as Seattle that’s some pretty serious weather and waves you’re gonna be into no matter what the season is. Any further north and that’s “deadliest catch” area. But here, these boats go out and  I can just stare and just really enjoy, and hope to do more of the same myself.

From the Swing Bar, we went back up to the pool and pretty much didn’t do a goddamn thing all day. The entire day has been spent swimming, floating, and making sure we have enough suntan lotion. Once we got hungry, we went to the next-door bar and had a couple shots of tequila, some beers and some really excellent fish dishes. While we were there one of Donny‘s friends that he’s made over the trip – Nathan – came by and we sat and chatted with him and his girlfriend. The nice bit is it when you’re on vacation you do get to meet people  – and generally there’s a lot of people we can get along with. There’s always a couple people who are out to be professionally unpleasant, but we’ve been lucky we haven’t had to deal with a lot of that so far.  With lunch we had an extra shot of tequila, a few more beers and then you went off to relax and Donny and I went down to the pool and made her attempted getting another Michelada. We ran into even more of the people that Donny made friends with the days before  – and of course Donny didn’t remember them because he was lit like a skunk. But we chatted them up a bit, then we floated around and did more nothing.

Yulia enjoyed some more sun and walked to the spa. She found out they had one spot remaining in the spa so she went for a massage. We toured the spa earlier and it looked amazing, but was really booked up. So apparently someone cancelled and Yulia was right on time to snap it up.  Yulia walked off into the spa, and i headed up the stairs to the lobby.  I’m gonna go find a croissant.

Yeah I passed out. I went back to the room to take a shower, sat down for a second and woke up an hour and a half later. I think I needed that. I only woke yup because Yulia got back from the spa – and apparently she slept through the massage as well. She said that the spa is one of the best that she’s seen – and that’s saying something. We were getting texts from the rest of the group – they were hanging out in the lobby ready for dinner. I dressed and joined them, and Yulia took some extra time to prep.

Once I found the group I discovered we had a man down – Kevin was feeling sick and was resting back in their room. It’s his first trip to Mexico so likely some combination of Montezuma’s Revenge, heat exhaustion, and Drinking Jalapeño Margaritas for 4 days straight. I’m sure it’s not the last one.

Yulia showed up and we went to the Italian Restaurant in the lobby. There were a few people ahead of us, it had just opened for dinner. We got up and found that they had a dress code – both Donny and I had to run back and put on pants. Seriously, life’s too short for pants. Just ask Winnie the Pooh. We made it back and got our table. The menu looked pretty good, and the wine list was OK. We ordered some cocktails and an actual bottle of nice wine. Both Yulia and Sara ordered Martini’s, and when they arrived – they tasted of Anise. It was really not right. I assume they added Sambuca Romana or something – but it didn’t work at all. We sent those back, and ordered straight Gin martinis. Appetizers came out, and Sara and Simone (being Italian) said what we were all thinking – the Italian food really wasn’t. Everything was just a bit off, and even if this was American-Italian food it wasn’t right. The mains came out and it was much the same – not bad per se, but really not good.

Most of the group didn’t even want to drink at this point. Fatigue had set in and everyone needed some rest. It’s been a long week of partying, swimming, walking and such, and everyone needed rest.

We leave tomorrow. Timing is pretty perfect. When you are this tired you know that you have rested.
