2007 World Press photo awards were announced Friday.

The winner in the "Portrait" category is one of the most heartwrenching photographs I’ve ever seen in my life.

Thanks to the proliferation of lawyers on Dailykos, I cannot display to you the photo in this diary.

However, you can see it here:

(before you click on it, be warned that it’s one of the most tragic photographs I’ve ever seen, difficult to look at — and I have a very strong stomach. Yet it’s not gory and it’s not a war photograph exactly.)

The photographer is Nina Berman and she’s very well known.

The rest of the winners can be seen here.

This photograph is amazing, because there is a 500 page novel’s worth of words, storylines, and emotions behind it.

at this link are the other winners, and I suggest you peruse all of them as well.  Many of them are shocking, saddening, beautiful, infuriating, and disturbing (and some are just great photos of things like sporting events).

Many of the most powerful ones are from last summer when Israel was bombarding Lebanon.  Some of those are hard to take, too.

Overall an amazing collection of photographs, most of which I had never seen.

But this one … I almost wish I hadn’t seen it.  Its truth is almost too much to take.  Yet … it’s the truth.   I’ll take it to my grave.
